Recently, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia showcased the potential of BSNL’s 5G technology by making a video call using the new network, signaling the readiness and robustness of the service.

The central government has been actively supporting BSNL’s upgrade to 5G, with substantial budget allocations and strategic planning. In the previous budget, over 80,000 crores were allocated to revive the telecom company, ensuring it can compete in the rapidly evolving telecom sector. The 5G trials, conducted at the Center for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) campus, demonstrated BSNL’s ability to deliver high-speed, low-latency communication, a crucial step in the nationwide rollout of 5G services.

BSNL’s journey towards 5G involves extensive preparation and testing. The company is currently offering 2G and 4G services in various telecom circles, though 4G is yet to be officially launched in some areas. With 85% of users relying on private networks due to connectivity issues, the introduction of 5G aims to change this dynamic.

Recently, Scindia posted a video on his official X handle, sharing his experience of making a video call using BSNL’s 5G network. The test, conducted at C-DOT, involved several other companies proposing to partner with BSNL for 5G trials, including Tata Consultancy Services, Lekha Wireless, and VVDN Technologies, among others. Although no specific company has been finalized for the trials, the offers indicate a strong interest in BSNL’s 5G rollout.

BSNL 5G Spectrum Allocation and Testing

The government has allocated several spectrum bands to BSNL for 5G testing, including 700MHz, 2200MHz, 3300MHz, and 26GHz. Currently, the 700MHz band is being used for trials, showcasing promising results in terms of coverage and speed. These trials are critical for fine-tuning the network before its full-scale launch across the country.
