- “X Dislike Button” aims to improve reply rankings on the platform.
- Recent findings suggest the button will resemble a broken heart icon.
- Testing of the feature includes downvoting on replies to highlight quality content.
Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter, is continuing its efforts to refine the user experience by developing a new feature commonly referred to as the X Dislike Button. This feature, designed to enhance the ranking of replies, is generating buzz among users and tech lover alike. While the company has not yet made an official announcement, recent discoveries indicate the feature may be more akin to a “dislike” button rather than a Reddit-style downvote icon.
Recent code references found in the X iOS app reveal a button resembling a broken heart icon situated next to X’s traditional heart-shaped “like” button. This button, alongside direct mentions of a “downvote” feature, suggests a significant change in how interactions on the platform may soon be managed.
Back in 2021, when Twitter first tested downvoting before Elon Musk’s acquisition, the experiment included both upvoting and downvoting across all posts. The latest tests on X indicate a shift in focus, with downvotes now only considered for replies. This adjustment aims to bring the most valuable replies to the forefront of lengthy threads, while less-liked responses would be pushed down. This could potentially reduce the prevalence of provocative content designed to elicit negative reactions.
Earlier this month, reverse engineer Aaron Perris, known as @aaronp613 on X, discovered references in the iOS app hinting at a downvote feature in development. Perris has since found additional image files in the app, reinforcing the idea that the button might be styled as a broken heart. Furthermore, he uncovered more explicit references to the feature.
Screenshots shared by Perris highlight new references to a “downvoting” function within the app, accompanied by text strings prompting users to confirm their downvote, such as “Do you want to downvote this post?” and “Downvote this post.” The language used, which mentions “posts” rather than just “replies,” raises questions about whether X plans to extend the downvote feature to all posts or keep it limited to replies.
Another user, @P4mui on X, provided videos demonstrating the dislike button in action. In one example, a user asked them to dislike a reply to a post. By enabling the dislike button through a feature flag, it was evident that the button is currently available only for replies. However, there is speculation about whether this will change in the future.
The appearance of the dislike button was also noted on an X employee’s account, where a video demoing a new method to expand replies was shared. This post was quickly deleted and re-uploaded without the dislike button visible, adding to the intrigue surrounding this feature.

In conclusion, the “X Dislike Button” could represent a significant shift in how interactions are managed on the platform, aiming to improve the quality of replies and reduce inflammatory content. As X continues to test and refine this feature, users and industry watchers will be keenly observing its development and potential impact on the social media sector.
