- BSNL 4G services is expected to launch across India by October 2024.
- The telco has successfully completed 4G trials and is setting up over 25,000 towers.
- BSNL’s delay is due to the government’s push for using an indigenous 4G network stack.
State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is preparing to roll out its 4G services nationwide. After years of anticipation, the telco has finally completed trials in all its circles, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to modernize its network. This move is crucial as BSNL aims to catch up with private telecom operators that have already advanced to 5G. For many customers, this launch signals a much-needed upgrade in service quality and speed, especially in areas where BSNL has been a longstanding provider.
According to a senior official, BSNL’s 4G services are slated to be available to customers by October 2024, following the successful completion of trials. The trials have shown promising results, encouraging BSNL to move forward with its commercial launch. To date, BSNL has installed around 25,000 4G towers across the country, and the company has already begun dispatching 4G SIM cards to customers in preparation for the launch.
BSNL 4G Services
BSNL’s journey to 4G has been a long one, primarily because of the government’s directive that the company use an indigenous 4G stack. Unlike private telecom giants like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, which have already launched their 5G services, BSNL has been operating mainly on 2G and 3G networks. This government mandate led to a partnership between BSNL and a consortium led by the Tata Group, which secured a Rs 15,000 crore contract in May 2023 to deploy 4G sites across India. The consortium includes Tejas Networks and the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT), both of which are supplying the essential equipment and technology needed for the rollout.
BSNL has also initiated pilot 4G services in Punjab, using the technology developed by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and the C-DoT-led consortium. These pilot services have already onboarded around 800,000 subscribers, marking a positive start to BSNL’s new 4G era. The company is currently in the process of deploying an additional one lakh towers to support both 4G and future 5G services across the nation.
The progress of BSNL’s 4G rollout is being closely monitored by the Ministry of Communications. Last month, the Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, emphasized the importance of the project by announcing the formation of a Project Management Unit (PMU) to oversee the launch. The PMU is setting daily targets for the project, which are being monitored at the highest levels of the government.

With the government’s backing and the involvement of top technology providers, BSNL is ready to deliver faster and more reliable services to its customers. As the October launch approaches, many are eagerly waiting to see how BSNL’s 4G services will perform and how quickly the company can transition into the 5G era.
